Regular pumping and cleaning keeps solids and sludge from accumulating and entering the drain field. That is the cheapest way to protect the field and the rest of the system.

Dig and set tank
Pit excavated, concrete or plastic tank lowered in and leveled, risers and lids fitted to grade.
Connect lines and field
House line tied to the inlet, outlet run to distribution, chamber rows laid out and piped.
Backfill and test
Sand backfill over the field, everything flow-tested, lids secured and the ground graded back.

Proper maintenance helps prevent backups, odors, drain-field problems, costly repairs, and a system that fails early. Follow these.
Have the tank pumped regularly
Inspect and pump every 2-3 years, based on tank size, occupants, and wastewater load. Regular pumping and cleaning stops solids from reaching the drain field.
Conserve water
Do not send a flood of water through the system at once. Fix leaking faucets and toilets. Spread laundry through the week. Use water-efficient fixtures when you can. Do not run the dishwasher and washer together when the system is already loaded.
Protect the drain field
Keep the field open for inspection and maintenance.

- Build structures over the drain field
- Install pools or other heavy structures over the system
- Plant trees or large shrubs over or next to the field
